College is difficult for everyone. It can be even more challenging for those
with Asperger's Syndrome. Usually, college students with Asperger's do not
need help with academics themselves, rather they need help communicating with people
and staying on track. We have designed a program for your success.
We have facilitators work with you to ensure your college success in the
following manner.
They email and
phone all of your professors and TA's prior to the beginning of the
semester to set up meetings with each one. At those meetings, the
professors and TA's learn how to interact with you. They also receive a
letter stating how Asperger's affects you, and what accommodations can
be put in place (click here for a
sample letter).
Your facilitator
works with you and the Student with Disabilities Department to
make sure that everything is done to help you. For example, if you need
a tutor or a note taker, your facilitator gets it for you.
Your facilitator
sets up a schedule for studying, monitors your work completion, and
tracks your success through meeting with you once a week. If you need
further contact with your TA, your facilitator does it. If you need to
work in a small group, your facilitator talks with that group to help
them understand you.
Your facilitator
follows up with your professors and TA's at the end of the semester to
make sure grading took into consideration your needs, and asks if there
is any make up work that can be done. This follow-up has been successful
at changing F's to C's or even B's (click
here for a sample letter).
